Is a Custom Dog Portrait a Painting? What You Are Actually Buying

Search for a custom painting of your dog and you will find 3 very different things sold under the same words: an original painted by an artist, a digital illustration printed on canvas, and a photo run through a filter. They look alike in a small thumbnail. They are not alike on your wall, in price, or in how long they take. Here is how to tell them apart, and exactly what you get from L’Atelier.

The short answer

An L’Atelier canvas is not a painting. It is a painting-style portrait printed on canvas: your dog, from your photos, placed into an original scene and printed on canvas. No one holds a brush. We would rather say so plainly than let a word do the selling.

3 things sold as a “custom pet painting”

1. An original painted by hand

An artist works from your photos in oil, acrylic, gouache or watercolor, on canvas, board or paper. You get the only copy, with real brushstrokes and real texture. This is the most personal option and the slowest: most artists take several weeks, and many have a waiting list before Christmas. Prices rise with size, the number of pets and the artist’s reputation, often into the hundreds of dollars and well beyond. If an object made by a human hand is what matters to you, this is the one to buy, from an independent artist whose past work you can see.

2. A digital portrait printed on canvas

An illustrator, a design team or a mix of people and software creates the image on a screen, and it is printed on canvas. The look can be anything: a painterly style, a clean illustration, a whole scene. You usually see a proof before printing, the turnaround is days rather than weeks, and the price is lower than an original. This is what most online pet portrait brands sell, including us. The better ones tell you so.

3. A filtered photo

Your photo is run through an effect that imitates paint or a sketch, often automatically, and printed. It is fast and cheap. Your dog is exactly as photographed, in the same room and the same light, with a painterly texture on top.

How to tell which one you are looking at

  • Read the product description, not the title. An original says who paints it and on what. A print says “printed on canvas” somewhere, if you look.
  • Look at the turnaround. A hand painted original in 5 days is unlikely. Weeks is normal for real paint.
  • Look at the price for a large size. A large original rarely costs the same as a medium one plus a few dollars. A print often does.
  • Ask about texture. An original has raised paint you can feel. A print on canvas has the weave of the canvas and nothing on top of it.
  • Ask who makes it. A brand that is honest about its process will tell you.

What you get from L’Atelier

Our scenes come first, before any dog is in them: a glasshouse with a brass daybed, a pastry shop in Paris, a marble staircase, a lavender road in Provence. Each one is built with AI tools and reviewed by a person until the room, the light and the seat are right. Then your dog is placed into the scene you chose, from your photos.

  1. You choose a scene from the collection and send at least 2 photos of your dog.
  2. We place your dog into it and send you a proof within 24 to 48 hours. You can ask for as many changes as you like.
  3. It is printed on canvas in the USA, stretched over wood bars, framed or frameless, and ships free to the contiguous US.

The result is a painting-style scene: soft light, a real room, your dog at its heart. On the wall it reads as a picture of a place rather than a head and shoulders study. Up close, it is a print on canvas, and we will never tell you otherwise.

Which should you choose?

  • You want brushstrokes made by hand and you have time: an original from an independent artist.
  • You want your dog in a whole scene, in days, at a print price: a digital portrait on canvas, like L’Atelier.
  • You want your dog exactly as in 1 favorite photo: a filtered or retouched photo print.
  • You have an idea that is not in any collection: Le Sur-Mesure builds a scene from your own brief, for 1 dog or 2.

Questions

Can I get a custom painting of my dog from a photo?

Yes, from an independent portrait artist, who will paint from your photos over several weeks. If you want a painting-style portrait printed on canvas instead, L’Atelier places your dog into a scene from your photos and sends a proof within 24 to 48 hours.

Is an AI pet portrait a painting?

No. It is a digital image, and when it is printed on canvas it is a print. At L’Atelier, AI tools help build the scenes, and a person reviews each one before it joins the collection.

Will it look like my dog?

That is what the proof is for. You see your dog in the scene before it is printed, and you can ask for changes to the face, the markings, the coat or the pose until it is right.
