How Much Does a Custom Pet Portrait Cost? Prices Compared
Custom pet portraits range from about $50 for a printed poster to $500 and more for a large framed canvas, and more again for a hand painted original. The gap is not random. The price depends on what you are actually buying: a printed poster, a canvas print, or a hand painted original. Here is how the 3 compare, what moves the price within each, and what to check before you order.
The 3 kinds of custom pet portrait
1. A printed portrait on paper. A digital illustration of your pet, usually in a set style (a costume, a cartoon, a vintage look), printed as a poster with or without a frame. This is the most affordable option. On October 11, 2026, Purr & Mutt's US store listed its custom vintage portraits from $49.99 for an unframed A4 print to $153.99 for a framed 18 by 24 inch print.
2. A printed portrait on canvas. The same kind of digital artwork, printed on canvas and stretched over a wooden frame, with or without an outer frame. Canvas costs more than paper because of the materials and the stretching. On October 11, 2026, Crown & Paw listed its "Custom Gallery Quality Pet Portrait" on canvas from $79 (8 by 10 inches, unframed) to $399 (32 by 48 inches, unframed), and from $99 to $599 with a black frame.
3. A hand painted original. An artist paints your pet in oil, acrylic or watercolor from your photos. Prices depend on the artist, the size and the number of pets, and usually start well above printed options. Expect weeks rather than days.
Listings do not always say which of the 3 they are selling. Our guide Is a custom dog portrait a painting? shows how to tell.
Where L'Atelier sits
L'Atelier makes printed canvases, in the second category, with 1 difference: instead of a costume or a plain background, your dog is placed into a full scene, a Paris pastry shop, a lavender road, a palace gallery, built before any dog is in it. The scenes are made with AI tools and reviewed by a person, and your dog is placed into them from your photos.
On October 11, 2026, prices were:
- Portrait and landscape scenes: $99 to $329, depending on size and frame.
- Panoramic scenes: $149 to $369.
- Le Sur-Mesure, a scene built around your own brief, for 1 or 2 dogs: $178 to $448.
Every L'Atelier canvas ships free to the contiguous US.
What drives the price
- Size. The biggest single factor. Doubling the width roughly quadruples the canvas.
- Frame. A floating frame adds to the price but finishes the piece; a frameless canvas with the image mirrored around the edge is the lighter option.
- Number of pets. Many studios charge per pet. At L'Atelier, each collection scene is made for 1 dog; Le Sur-Mesure can hold 2.
- Revisions. Some studios limit changes or charge for them. Check before you order. L'Atelier includes unlimited revisions on the proof.
- Shipping. A large framed canvas is expensive to ship. Check whether it is included.
Hidden costs to check
- Is shipping included? For large canvases it can add a lot.
- How many revisions are included, and is there a proof before printing?
- Is the frame included in the price you saw, or an extra option?
- What happens if it arrives damaged? At L'Atelier, if a canvas arrives damaged or misprinted, a photo within 72 hours of delivery gets you a new one, free.
- Can you get a refund if you change your mind? Most custom work cannot be refunded once it is made, including ours. Know this before you order.
Which one is right for you
- For a small budget or a fun gift: a printed poster in a set style.
- For a piece that hangs in a main room: a canvas, framed, in a size that suits the wall.
- For an heirloom with brushstrokes: a hand painted original from an independent artist.
