5 PUPPY FACTS FOR NATIONAL PUPPY DAY
Disregard all other holidays because none are ever going to be as doggone important as national puppy day. Get ready for heart-melting sweet kisses, puppy breath, and boundless energy. March 23rd marks the day that all dog enthusiasts will bark (we mean jump) with joy over. To celebrate, our team at Bonne et Filou is sharing a few of our favorite facts about ever-so-loveable puppies.
THE WORD PUPPY HAS FRENCH ROOTS
According to some etymologists, the word puppy may have stemmed from the French word, Poupée, which means doll. In fact, the word puppy didn’t even enter the English language until roughly the 16th century. Many believe that William Shakespeare’s King John was one of the first written uses of the word puppy dog. Before the introduction of this word, English speakers referred to newborn dogs as whelps. Avez-vous déjà vu un chiot plus mignon? If you don’t know French, the previous question translates: Have you ever seen a cuter puppy? Someone give @bailey_thefrenchie a baguette, and she’s set to live out her perfect puppy life in Paris!
SOME PUPPIES ARE BORN GREEN
One of the most exciting and perhaps adorable facts that we discovered was that puppies born in light litters could be born green! Yes, you read that right. We were as shocked as you are. However, the green hue that dogs can be born with is natural and fades gradually over the first month of the puppy’s life. Dogs like @Wysteriahillgoldensanddoxies’ litter can turn green due to a pigment in the mother’s placenta called Biliverdin. While this has happened to a few litters in the UK, don’t expect your puppies to come out green. However, if they do, don’t fret. Consider it the luck of the Irish blessing you!
YOU CAN HAVE IDENTICAL TWIN PUPPIES
We all know that identical human twins exist, but up until recently, no one had discovered that identical puppy twins could exist, too! The cutest and perhaps the fluffiest twins are golden cockapoo’s @digby.and.otis. Typically, every puppy in the womb is in its own placenta, but in the case of twin puppies found in South Africa, they found a placenta that held two dogs. The doctor who discovered this later tested the pair and confirmed that these two puppies were identical twins.
YOU MAY BE MORE PRODUCTIVE AFTER LOOKING AT PUPPIES
We all now have an excuse to look at puppies at work or hang photos of our favorite four-legged friend in our office. An experiment conducted in 2012 at Hiroshima University found that individuals who were shown puppy photos had an easier time concentrating on the task at hand than those who looked at pictures of food or adult animals. If you need a list of puppy Instagrams to make you more productive throughout your workday, don’t worry, Bonne et Filou has you covered.
