According to Business Insider, approximately 600,000 dogs live in New York City. But city life isn’t for every royal pooch. A lot of times, there are restrictions in NYC living spaces; the size, weight, and breed can be the difference between living in the apartment/condo of your dreams or the one down the street that’s just, “Okay.” We came up with a list of some of the best dog breeds that you’ll be able to take with you anywhere.

Pomeranian

Pomeranians have a lot of energy and love socializing. They do great in small spaces and will usually find “their place” that will become their go-to spot to burrow and relax in the house. Although they are barkers, they are easily trainable. Pomeranians don’t shed, but do need to be brushed regularly to pull some of their undercoat out. They typically grow to 7 inches tall and 3-7 pounds.

Bichon Frise

Bichons are the perfect breed for city living. They don’t grow above 1 foot tall and at full size will be no more than 7-12 pounds, which meets most apartment/condo restrictions. They’re smart, easily trainable, and love to cuddle! Although they have a lot of energy at times, a couple of short walks a day will do the trick.

Yorkshire Terrier

Yorkies are small, hypoallergenic dogs that are considered low maintenance and well-loved. They make excellent guard dogs in apartments and condos alike. Yorkies love playing and need adequate exercise, but because of how small they are, you can easily burn off their energy with indoor activities like playing fetch. They usually don’t get above 8-9 inches and 4-6 pounds.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are royal cuties. Not only are they extremely relaxed the majority of the time, but they are easily entertained and do well, in even small spaces. At about 1 foot tall, they won’t get over 13-18 pounds. They love a quiet lifestyle and rarely bark, which is great for city life.

Poodle

Some poodles can be very active dogs, while others can have a very mild and calm temperament. Poodles are adaptable, making them a great breed for city life. Depending on what size poodle you have, they can range from 15-70 pounds.

Australian Cattle Dog

This breed is perfect for the active city person who loves taking their pup with them on adventures. They do shed but are extremely smart and love stimulating activities. They are usually allowed in all apartments and condos as long as there is no weight restriction. Australian cattle dogs are medium-sized dogs that typically get up to 17-20 inches and 30-50 pounds.

Mastiff
